There’s a lot of buzz around clean beauty: what it is, how to find it and why you should care about it. But what is clean beauty? This post will answer that question and help you make sense of all the hype.
Clean beauty products are anything that is free of harmful chemicals. These products are free of synthetic fragrances, parabens, phthalates and sulphates. They’re also free of synthetic dyes and colours (like FD&C Yellow No. 5). The last thing to avoid in clean beauty products is mineral oil, which can be derived from petroleum or crude oil (and isn’t always listed as such).
Clean beauty products have an ingredient list that you can read.
Clean beauty products have an ingredient list you can read. It should be listed in descending order—this means that the ingredients with the highest concentration are listed first, followed by those with lower concentrations. This gives you a clear idea of what’s in your product and where it ranks in terms of its makeup.
You may also notice that certain ingredients are listed multiple times with different names: this is because they may come from several sources (for example, agave nectar could come from either a plant sap or a cactus). If something has many different spellings or multiple sources, it’s worth researching where exactly your product is coming from and whether these variations matter to you or not.
Another useful tip when trying to determine what’s clean about a product is knowing that some companies will break down their ingredients into different categories for clarity: for example, if there’s more than one kind of oil included as part of the formula’s formulation process (e.g., rosehip seed oil), you’ll see them grouped together under “essential oils/plant extracts” instead of being lumped together under just “oils.”
Clean beauty products are made with ingredients you can probably find in the kitchen or pharmacy. The good news is that most of these ingredients are safe and gentle on your skin, hair, and nails. You’ll notice they’re not tested on animals either! these products also do not contain synthetic chemicals or artificial fragrances. Instead, they use natural and organic ingredients to make their formulas effective without harming your health.
What is greenwashing?
Greenwashing is when a company makes claims that its products are “natural” or “organic” when they are not. The term was coined in 1986 by Jay Westerveld, an environmental activist and journalist. If you ever see an advertisement for a shampoo that says “100% organic,” it’s probably greenwashing.
In addition to making false claims about what’s actually in their products, companies often use the term “clean beauty” as a marketing ploy that implies their products are better for your health than other brands on the market—even though there aren’t any regulations around what constitutes clean beauty products at all.
Use your judgment to decide what’s right for you.
So, how do you know what’s right for you? The first step is to actually read the list of ingredients on the packaging. You may be surprised by what you find there. The second step is to use your judgment to decide what’s best for your body and mind. Are any of these ingredients known as allergens or irritants? Do they seem suspicious in any way (e.g., do they sound like long-form chemical names that don’t exactly roll off your tongue)?
The third step involves trusting your instincts and not being afraid to ask questions when something doesn’t feel right—and then testing it out! It might take some time before you find a brand that works well with your skin type, but keep experimenting until then!
